Herdade do Mouchao Tonel Nº 3-4 2008

Grape varieties: Alicante Bouschet.

Production method: The Alicante Brouschet grapes are picked from the Carapetos Vineyard, placed into 20kg boxes and immediately transported to the winery for vinification. Fermentation takes place in stone tanks where foot-treading occurs twice daily. After fermentation has taken place, and the quality is assessed, the wine is discharged into wooden vats - numbers 3 and 4 - made from Portuguese oak, mahogany and macacauba (brasilian hard wood). The wine then rests in these casks for 24 months after which it is bottled as Tonel Nº 3-4, if the excellence in quality is upheld. This wine is only made in years of exceptional quality. Ageing in bottle began in late 2010.

Climate: Mediterranean with cold winters, rainfall concentrated between October to February (with an average annual rainfall of 700mm) and hot summers with temperatures reading 40ºC at the time of maturation.

Soil: A mediterranean mix of clay and sand; poor to average quality.

Colour: The wine is a deep garnet colour.
Aroma: With an intense aroma of enormous concentration, revealing hints of eucalyptus, mint, spice and dark fruit.
Palate: On the palate, an initial softness is followed by an intense freshness, balance and elegance, with an extraordinarily high concentration of tannins and impressive length. All this ensures the exceptional quality of this wine and its enormous capacity for longevity.
