Honrado - Amphora's Orange Wine

The production of the Amphora Wine "Honrado" is the result of a family project between father and son with a wide range of abilities that are very different from one another, but complement each other. Ruben Honrado, the son, a great lover of design and marketing who has traveled the world in a personal quest, has had the opportunity to be in contact and to live with other cultures over the last few years, which allowed him to open his horizons and explore other ways of thinking; and António Honrado, the father, manager of the famous "O País das Uvas" Typical Restaurant and a vivid Amphora Wine producer for over 15 years, who feels the greatest pride in his humble origins in Alentejo, and for all that these lands have taught him over the years. The father, who once wished to take his wine beyond the borders of Alentejo, allied himself with the son, and thus the wine "Talha" was born - a product that despite having a rejuvenated and differentiated image, presents as it's fundamental dogma the respect by the history, the culture, and the tradition of Alentejo.

The Concept

Wine produced in an artisan way through the millenarian technique of fermenting grapes in clay hoists. This technique, which came from Roman times, has remained unchanged over more than 2000 years of history, moving from one generation to the other through popular wisdom. It is in the region of Vila de Frades, a small town in the heart of Alentejo with less than 900 inhabitants that this tradition has been kept alive, and which is recognized today as "the Capital of Amphora Wine".

A handcrafted wine

The fact that the Clay Amphoras have different sizes, porosity and thicknesses imply that the oxygen and temperature levels at which the grapes and wine masses are subjected during fermentation are different from one deposit to the other. This way, although often made with the same grapes, the Amphora Wines have the peculiarity of being all different from each other due to the unique touch that each Amphora confers. It is therefore impossible to replicate a lot, which consequently translates the uniqueness of this type of wine and ensures its artisanal character. It is for these and other reasons that the process of Traditional Amphora Wine Production is currently the subject of presentation of the application to the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
