The family-owned business is run by the winemaker Luis Duarte and his wife Dora Simoes. The company was founded in 2007 and has its base in the Alentejo wine region, sub-region of Reguengos de Monsaraz, where their vineyards are located.
The family owns two estates:
- Monte do Carrapatelo Estate with 12 hectares, where the wine brands Rubrica and Monte do Carrapatelo are produced. The vineyards are planted with Antão Vaz, Sémillon, Verdelho, Viognier, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Miúda.
- Terra Calma Estate, has 75 hectares and is planted with new and old vines, most of them are Portuguese native grape varieties - (white grape varieties) Antão Vaz, Arinto, Viosinho, Verdelho, Gouveio; (red grape varieties) Touriga Nacional, Tinta Miúda, Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet, Moreto, Castelão, Tinta Caiada, among others.
The brands Rapariga da Quinta, Artefacto, Materia, Miragem, Maravista, and Moçoila are produced with grapes from these vineyards. The property has also 10 hectares of traditional olive groves.
The company produces and exports quality wines from Alentejo, Douro and Vinho Verde, and their exports account for 80% of its production. The main export markets are the USA, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Japan and China.
Luis has been winemaker for the last 30 years and was awarded 3 times by the technical press as the Best Winemaker in Portugal, in 1997, 2007, and in 2014. We was also nominated by the German magazine "Der Feinschmecker" at the Der Feischmecker Wine Awards for Best Winemaker in 2010.
He was distinguished in 2015 by the President of the Republic of Portugal, Anibal Cavaco Silva with the Order of Business Merit, Class of Agricultural Merit.
Luis was born in Angola in 1966 (a great vintage year!), returned to Portugal at the age of 9 and lived and studied Winemaking at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD). He moved after his studies to Alentejo. He is married with Dora Simoes and has 3 children: Luis, António and Inês. The family lives in Reguengos de Monsaraz in Monte do Carrapatelo.
