Historical Notes

João Portugal Ramos began to make a name for himself, first, as a consultant winemaker with some of the best-known Portuguese producers and then, since 1992, as a winemaker and producer in his own name.

His success and the large number of accolades received have won him renown nationally and internationally as one of the principal forces behind the huge improvement of Portuguese wines in the last decade.

The Alentejo was chosen by João Portugal Ramos to be the home of his own first wine. He planted 5 hectares near Estremoz in 1990, where he has been living since 1988. In 1989, he expanded to the Ribatejo, the Beiras and the Douro.

Today, João Portugal Ramos vineyards in the Alentejo comprise 500 hectares.
We enjoy welcoming visitors to Vila Santa with all the calm tranquillity that the Alentejo is famous for. Visitors coming to get to know the wines of João Portugal Ramos, one of the most prestigious wine producers in the country, will have the chance to appreciate the depth of his passion for the Alentejo.

Facilities

The Vila Santa winery launched Estremoz on the route of great wines, attracting visitors from all over the world. Whether it be for a walk or a luncheon with friends, clients or staff, we offer a tranquil spot to spend a leisurely time tasting our wines and the local cuisine.

A wine shop, a tasting room, meeting and dining rooms are available at the Vila Santa winery so that you can come, taste and take home our wines, the perfect souvenir of your visit.

The Winery

Vila Santa winery was built in 1997 in a traditional Alentejo style. It was then extended in 2000, covering today a total area of 9000 m2. The winery is equipped with the most modern winemaking technology and includes bottling facilities and ageing cellars. At Vila Santa, modern techniques co-exist in perfect harmony with traditional Portuguese winemaking – an example of this is that some of the grapes for our most sophisticated red wines are still trodden in lagares (low stone tanks).
