Quinta do Mouro is located in Estremoz, in an area thought to have the best terroir in the Alentejo.

The dentist Miguel Louro decided to take up growing grapes in 1989 and to begin making wines. He set up the Quinta do Mouro, with 6 hectares of vineyards divided between Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Castelão grapes.

Quinta do Mouro 1994 was the first wine launched and it rapidly became well known in the region.

In 1998 eight more hectares of vineyards were planted whilst the Castelão plots were grafted with Touriga Nacional scions. In the same year, the winery was built on the ground floor of the house, and wines labelled Casa dos Zagalos are launched.

The wines were so successful that the vineyards were extended in 2004 and the wine range was enlarged with Vinha do Mouro.

The estate currently comprises 27 hectares of vineyards planted mostly in schistose soils.
